We spend around one third of our lives in bed, which is why it’s so important to make sure our mattresses are clean, supportive and in good condition.

It makes sense that we should always aim to get the best possible sleep in order to stay well-rested, alert and top of our game as well as staving off those aches, pains and afternoon slumps that come with a poor night’s sleep.

Changing your mattress when it’s old and tired is an important part of sleep wellness, but how do we know it’s time for a fresh start?

Here are some signs it’s time to change your mattress:

Sleep Deprived

If you’re constantly waking up with a stiff neck, aching back or tight shoulders, it may be that your mattress no longer has the support it used to. Over time, the structure weakens and a once firm mattress is now a little lack-lustre. It could be time for a change.

Motion Transfer

A good-quality mattress should provide good support for you and your partner. If you share your bed, and either of you are woken in the night by the movements of the other, it may be that the mattress is old and has lost its firmness.

Wear and Tear

All mattresses have a maximum lifespan no matter how well you take care of them. If you notice your mattress dipping, creaking or squeaking, or you feel the springs poking through the padding, it’s time for a new mattress!

Unwanted Guests

No matter how clean we keep our beds, mattresses can be playgrounds to unwelcome guests like mites and bed bugs, not to mention dead skin cells and bacteria.

If your mattress is old, even if you clean and flip your mattress, and wash your bedding regularly, you may still be playing host to these microscopic guests. Another good reason not to let your mattress get too old.

In fact….

8 Years is The Recommended Maximum Lifespan of Your Mattress!

The Sleep Council recommend a mattress replacement every eight years. Once your mattress is 8 years old, it will have lost most of its original firmness and wont be supporting your body properly or aiding the best possible sleep.

If you’ve noticed any of the above issues, it may be time to change your mattress.

We have lots of high quality mattresses, which can be ordered in standard or custom sizes. Our high-end pocket mattresses, for example, can last as long as 10 years, depending on usage and the type of bed frame you have. Please see our range here.
